Research Script Foregrounding

Movie's: Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars Episode 2 Attack of the Clones
Research Topic: The Hero's Journey; Journey to the under world

Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back
Scene 1: Location in film: Planet Dagobah: Luke Goes into the a cave shrouded by the Dark side and as Luke entered the cave which went below ground and makes it look like the underworld, Luke goes through the cave and is stopped by what looks like Darth Vader and Luke fights him and cuts of the head of Vader and when the front part of the mask explodes off Luke sees his own face which shows what he may become in the future, What he fought was a Shadow of him self. This is one example of the journey to the underworld.

Scene 2: Location in film: Planet Bespin; Carbon Freezing Camber: Luke enters the chamber and is attacked by Vader. the Carbon Freezing camber also looks like hell because of the low lighting and how there is steam coming from the ground and how Vader is trying to capture him. This scene in the film is also like a journey to the underworld.

Scene 3: Location in film: Bespin; Tower bridge: Vader Fight Luck an at the end of the Bridge extension Vader cuts of Luke's Right hand and tries to get Luke to come with him and tells Luke that he is his father and Luke jumps off; when Luke's hand is cut off and this is also a journey to the underworld because of how Luke is lots of pain after getting his hand cut off and then finding out that his father is Vader.

Star Wars Episode 2 Attack of the Clones
Scene 1: Location: Tatooine; tusken raider camp night: Anakin Skywalker is looking for his mother and finds out that she may be at this one Tusken raider camps and arrives the camp at night. he finds his mother who is very proud of him and she dies, then his emotions go out of control and he gets very upset and angry because he could not save his mom so he takes his anger out on all of the Tusken raiders by killing them. This scene is like a journey to the underworld because in the scene the tusken raiders look like creatures from the under world and Anakin killed out of anger which he shouldn't of done.

Scene 2: Location: Geonosis; Droid Factory: Anakin and Padmé Amidala enter a factory of machines making machines and the factory looks like the underworld because of all the steam and molten hot metal, as well as the Geonosians trying to kill them. As they try to rescue Obi wan the are captured by Jango Fett and some droids.

Scene 3: Location: Geonosis; Solar Sail ship hanger; Anakin and obi wan both arrive as Count Dooku is about to leave and a light saber duel begins with Anakin rushing is and getting pushed out of the way and the Obi Wan takes on Dooku, then after Dooku injures Obi wan Anakin jumps in and takes on Dooku and gets his right arm cut off like he will do to Luke in the future. This is an example of a journey to the under world because the in the light sabra duel Anakin losses his arm and the room they are in becomes dark as well for a short time.

Responce to Get a Date

The film get a date has some visual concept in it with what is happening when the woman is knocking on the door and each time there is something that makes the sound of the knocking not there like the shower running and the cutting of the food. Other thinks that made the film really good was the reuse of previous shot were they shot it once and then used it over and over again but with different voice overs. Some of the scenes like this were the scene of the lady walking up the stairs and down and the one were she was adding the makeup. The split screen with the two doing the same action at the same time with the scene of the them flipping through the news paper. Also the film used ideas from other films like Amelie with the profile shots of the person and the narrator describing what they did for a living and what there interest were. The last thing about the film is how well they people were able to get rid of things that were in the shot so to make the two characters feel alone and to make the audience fell that the characters fell lonely.

Visual Concept Project

I. What is a Visual concept, well it is film that uses visuals like images with out dialogue to show the audience the point. The work by getting the point of the part of the film across without any dialogue with camera motion, blocking, color, lighting, and other things.

II. Points to consider
1. I can show the passage of time by creating scenes with the different seasons, or I could show one person changing over the years, or by having the sun set and then the sun rise.
2. The emotional act that I will examining is not caring which i forgot what term is for it..
3. Certain objects that could trigger memories of not caring could be a broken picture the person didn't care about or a damaged item that they never cared about.
4. The emotion is active at certain times but only when a person doesn't care for something.
5. My visual concept would be abstract.
6. At the closure of the memory it could end with the person caring for what he/she once didn't care for.

III. The emotional moment i would like to explore cinematically would be about a people that didn't care for something and over time began to care for it and eventually cared for it fully.

Response to Independent Script Sample A

1. The writer structures his/her script by first with news footages of Tony Blair and then Jaques Chairac. Then the two narrators are introducing and they talk about the social ties in Britain and France. Then they go into talking about social realism, then goes into talking about it in terms of film history, culture and narrative focus from the French. Then the writer talks about the film history, culture and narrative focus in British films on British social Realism. The ending is on the two narrators telling the viewer what they should do.
2. Most of the visuals the writer used to enhance the is like footage that the writer decriped that were not from the films researched that related to what they were talking about like in the first couple pages like the shots with the people going by and not noticing the narrators and the shot of the Eiffel tower. Other visuals used were clips from the films the writer is using for his/her research like La Haine.
3. The topic the writer researched was how representations of social realism differed in French and British film cultures. What the writer used to research his/her topic were the films the writer research, websites' like Guardian, and SEX, CLASS, AND REALISM, and books kuje Film As Social Practise and Introduction To Communiction Studies.
4. I would give would give it a score of 25 because the script has an excellent understanding of the topic of how representations of social realism differed in French and British film cultures. Also the visual and audio elements are really well detailed in what they will look like and people can image what the scene will look like. Lastly that all the films covered in the scripted are related to the topic because the films have the social realism of the counties they are made based on.

What topic I want to reseach for the Film Project and the thesis for it.

The director I will be researching is George Lucas and i will bee looking at how in the first trilogy of Star Wars he used the Hero mythology. I will be looking at how it is showed in each movie individually and then how it is showed in all three movie together.

Independent Research Sample

1. Jason Structured and discusses his topic on how Power through Lighting and Color in International Cinema by first staring off by showing us how lighting and color can be used and then first talks about the first movie Tsotsi and how it used lighting and color in the film with interviews of the director and with voiceovers by Jason. Then he went into talking about how Sin City used Lighting and color with interviews from the Director of that movie.

2. He used actual clips from the two films and a lightning effect in the beginning and end of the documentary it enhance the V.O. of the narrative.

3. The topic he researched was Power through Lighting and Color in International Cinema, and the resource he used were the two actual films (Sin City and Tsotsi), American Cinematographer, Blunt Review, and Understanding Movies for the research on his topic.

4. After looking at the script and the rubric, I would give the paper a 24 because through out the script he shows great understanding the film topic he had researched and uses good clips from the film to defend his topic. His structure of the script is strong since Jason uses interviews from the directors to defend his topic even more along with his own narration which explain what his topic is about and how the films he looked at use it. Lastly that he uses are related to the topic because the two films lighting and color usage related to what Jason is talking about, like in Sin City how black and white color is used instead of actual color.

Film Analysis

The film I am analyzing is a a three part movie on youtube called "Halo 3 Tricks: The Movie" by CMNeir.
Halo 3 Tricks: The Movie *Part 1*
Halo 3 Tricks: The Movie *Part 2*
Halo 3 Tricks: The Movie *Part 3*
The three part film is based on a event that had happened to the two major characters RednecSniper and TaurineDippy which was that Dippy tried to get RednecSniper to help him get Microsoft points in a game against someone and RednecSniper got fed up with dippy was really mad a Dippy which led to the creation of the First Halo 3 Tricks Movie which is based of of this event. The most of the films effects were already part of the Video game halo 3 with all of the lighting and the explosions and all the sounds besides the music. The Camera work has crane shots, ECU, ESL, Panning, Birds eye views, trunking shots, WS, MCU, and Zooming out shots. Eventhought the films does have a few cuss words in it the first part of the film introduces antagonist, RednecSniper and what he is going to try to do to the Protagonist, Dippy. The first part of the film shows the exposition which gave the background info what the conflict is who the protagonist and antagonist are, and the setting which is in the Halo 3 video game. Then in the second half of part one it leads into the Rising action when RednecSniper is sent to kill all of the the people in Halo 3 tricks. After failing to kill them this leads to the climax which is when a battle between Halo 3 tricks and the main villain and his army in which the Halo 3 tricks wins the battle against the army and leads into the falling action in part 3 of the film where Dippy fights RednecSniper and is hurt after Rednec shots him in the leg, and as the main villain is going to kill Dippy it leads into the conclusion of the film were Rednec saves Dippy and they go back to the base were everyone is heading to and that were the film ends. The film does follow the Dramatic structure or the Freytag's pyramid. The film itself is could be put a Drama film, but there is a little comedy in it in the end part of the 2nd part of the film and after the credits as well. This movie is based around what happened a few months back, but the film would be a formalistic film because it is not a real story and it is not in real life. The acting of the film could be considered good because in most of the lines by the cast members were really good, for example when the villain read his lines he really sounded like he was an evil person. Some other things about the acting was sometimes the actors laughed so in which made the movie seem a little less serious but for the most part the films action was good. Also one other part of the editing that was good was when Rednec is hearing voices in his mind and the sides of the screen are kind of blur which was very good. Thats real all i have to say for the analysis of this film and it is a very good film.

Areas of Research

One potential topic that i would look at in film would be film mythology. It is because many movies have in some way some mythology in them such as the Star Wars which has many examples of mythology in all 6 movies of the two star wars Trilogy. One of the mythologies of the Star Wars films is the Hero's Journy where the main Character in episodes 4-6 Luke Skywalker goes from a farm boy on Tatooine to a jedi knight.
Films that i could research is Scifi films like the Star Wars, Star Trek, transformers, and other scifi films. Scifi movies have some mythology and i would be intrested in Reseaching these movies to see what mythologies are in them.

What themes are I'm interested in exploring as a film maker?

There are many themes out there in movies such as friendship, slavery, greed, and love are some of the many themes of films. The one theme of films I'm interested in is the Hero's Journey. It's because the journey of the hero of the film can end with tragedy or it could end with the Hero saving the day and the ending is a happy one.

Personal Story

One personal Story that i had that could be intresting for a film could be when my sister had fractured her leg. It was about 8 weeks ago back in August she fractured her tibia playing soccer and went to Peninsula Hospital to after she hurt her leg. 5 days after going to Peninsula Hospital she went to UCSF were she got the surgery. At UCSF the doctors were very kind and compassionate and did a very well job. This would be a good story for a film because of the great service my sister got at UCSF.
